Anagram

Title: “Anagram”
Media: Video.
Materials/Technique: Mono-channel video.
Duration: 6.35min.
Date: 2012
Edition amount: 5
The video “Anagram” shows a blind man describing ordinary objects according to their shapes. The artwork tries to make a reflection about what we consider real, from his specific position as a blind person, whose life sense experience is different. This reflection from the language standpoint questions subjective notions we have about the truth of things.

New Man

“New man”
16mm Digitized film.
Language: Spanish. Subtitles: English. 3.37min
2019.
Short film in which some Cuban teenagers start a conversation that makes us think about the success paradigm and its patterns, in contemporary Cuba.
During the dialogue, they refer to the reggaeton phenomenon and the culture of “reparto”, but their ideas go far beyond music, and involve other derivations of it, such as the image, the language, the body, the attitude, among other conceptual figures, that work as models for the new generations.

Little bread and poor circuses

Title: “Little bread and poor circuses”
Media: Mono-channel video (displayed in loop in a small screen)
Materials/Technique: –
Dimension: 8.22min
Date: 2011
Edition amount: 5
Video displayed in a small screen, which shows an almost inert image of a female character waiting for something that does not occur. The boring sensation and the waiting of the character try to generate calm and contemplation from the audience. This calm, is upset when it starts to snow.
The snow effect is presented as a contradiction, in a kind of surrealistic way, because it does not fit with the weather conditions depicted in the video. This responds to mi interest of alluding, not to real snow, but to “wishing” snow, as a symbol of internal wishes of change that do not materialized in reality. The title of the piece is significant; it provides a context for the concern that motivates the creation of this art piece.

Genealogy of the metaphor

“Genealogy of the metaphor”
Video-installation-action.
Mono-channel video, postcards, wooden shelves.
Variable dimensions.
2016.
I pretend to generate a reflection about lexicon and the load that the spoken language has in the construction of meanings, in a specific context. I focus in the scope of the word Yuma, in Cubans´ popular culture. An expression that acts as a metaphoric filter which transcends the only fact of designating or naming, and which works as a personal mental image, tinged by the experience of each person in relation to politics, homeland, culture, emigration, success, language, family, among other conceptual figures.

This artwork is based on the construction of a genealogical tree, including the closest members of my family in Cuba, in order to compile each one of their impressions regarding this term. From that structure the spectator is faced with a proposal: to establish a communication link with some of my family members, using as a support, some postcards allegoric to the City of Yuma or Yuma County, in Arizona, United States.
